Application:Aluminum sulfate (aluminum alum) is used mainly in the paper industry, dyeing, tanning and as a coagulant for making in water. These uses all stem from the fact that aluminum salts hydrolyze quite strongly in water to form aluminum hydroxide.
– In fabric dyeing: When dyeing that hydroxide, it is adsorbed by the fabric fiber and held firmly on the fiber, it will combine with the dye to form a stable color, so it has the effect of a mordant.
In water treatment: There is a flocculating effect in water because that hydroxide, with a very developed surface, adsorbs suspended substances in the water, pulling them together to settle down.
– In the paper industry: Aluminum sulfate is added to the pulp along with table salt. Aluminum chloride, formed by an exchange reaction, is hydrolysed more strongly to hydroxide. This hydroxide will bind the cellulose fibers together so that the paper does not smudge when writing.
Salts of aluminum in general and aluminum sulfate in particular are widely used, especially in Water treatment.
