The thermal power plants operating and under construction in Asia threaten to undermine the goal of preventing global warming. This is confirmed by the Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Fatih Birol in an interview with the "Financial Times" on October 31 about the goals to combat climate change.
Mr. Fatih Birol said that last year, greenhouse gas emissions from thermal power plants, accounting for about three-quarters of total emissions, increased again after three years of maintaining a stable level. The IEA predicts these emissions will continue to rise this year. The IEA report said that last year, electricity production from thermal power plants increased by 4% in China and 13% in India.

Earlier this October, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned of global warming, saying that it was necessary to maintain the global temperature increase at 1.5 degrees Celsius above the global average. the pre-industrial era, otherwise catastrophic climate change would not occur. To have a 50/50 chance of maintaining a temperature increase of no more than 1.5% above the set level, by 2050, the world must be "carbon neutral". This means that emissions from thermal power plants must be offset by removing an equivalent amount of carbon from the atmosphere.
While generating electricity from wind and solar energy is now becoming much cheaper than building and operating conventional thermal power plants. According to Mr. Fatih Birol, the solution to this problem will be the main topic on the agenda of the IEA in the upcoming discussions.
